Tax → Tax Rate

Tax takes three steps, and the third is the one people miss. Creating rates and groups charges nothing until you point a setting at the group.

  1. Pick your company in the top bar. Without one the rate list later comes up empty with no explanation.
  2. Go to Financials → Tax Management → Tax Rates and click New tax rate.
  3. Type a Name and a Code.
  4. Type the Rate (%) — just the number, so 15.
  5. Pick the Tax type: VAT, NHIL, GETFund, COVID-19 levy, Withholding tax or Other.
  6. Click Save.

Nothing charges a bare rate — sales only ever use a group.

  1. Go to Financials → Tax Management → Tax Groups and click New tax group.
  2. Type a Name.
  3. Under Tax rates, pick your rate. Click Add rate for each further one.
  4. Click Save.

This is the step that makes tax happen.

  1. Go to Settings → Business → Workspace settings.
  2. Open the Tax group.
  3. Turn on Override for Default tax group and choose the group you just made.
  4. While you are there, check Charge tax on sales is on, and set Price tax mode to Tax-inclusive or Tax-exclusive.
  • The “Compound tax” toggle does nothing to the arithmetic. Rates in a group are always added onto the same base, never compounded. The helper text is misleading; the switch only changes a label.
  • Inactive rates still show in the group picker but are ignored when charging. A group containing one silently charges less than it appears to.
  • Deleting a group that the setting points at is not blocked — and tax then quietly stops being charged.
  1. Go to Financials → Tax Management → Tax Filings and click New filing.
  2. Type a Caption and check the Year and Month.
  3. Type the Expected amount and the Filed amount.
  4. Pick the Method you paid by, and set the Start date, End date and Tax office.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Open the row menu and click Post to GL to record the payment in your accounts.
  • Posting can silently do nothing — if the amount is zero, the filing has no location, or the posting profiles are missing. Check the Posted badge, not the message.
  • There is no cancel or void, and deleting a posted filing leaves its accounting entry behind with no reversal.

If you are fiscalising invoices — GRA E-VAT in Ghana, for example — that is not in Tax Management. Look under Integrations:

  • E-Invoice Providers — where you connect the provider and enter your taxpayer ID
  • Fiscal Transmissions — what has been sent and what failed

Both need the Professional plan. With nothing connected, documents post as normal without being fiscalised.
