How to build the navigation menu

The menu must be named “Main” — nothing else works

Your shop looks for exactly one menu, by the address made from its name, and that address must be main. So the menu has to be called “Main”.

The screen’s own advice — “a header menu, footer columns, a mobile menu” — produces menus called Header, Footer links and Mobile menu, and the shop never looks at any of them. Following the on-screen guidance gets you a menu that does nothing.

The name is fixed permanently once saved, so getting it right first time matters.

1. Go to Online Store → Menus and click New menu.
2. Type the Name: Main. Nothing else.
3. Leave it Active and save.
4. In the tree on the right, add your entries:
   • Label — what shoppers read.
   • Link — an internal path like /collections/bread, or a full https:// address. Leave it empty for an entry that only groups others.
   • Sits under — Top level, or a parent entry.
   • Visible — Yes.
5. Drag entries to reorder them. That saves immediately.

Footer and mobile menus are not built here

Your footer links and your phone’s bottom bar come from the Appearance screen — the Footer and Mobile nav tabs. A menu created here for either purpose is ignored entirely. See Designing your shop.

Four fields on an entry do nothing

• Icon name — never drawn on a menu entry, despite the helper text.
• Opens in — an entry set to open in a new tab opens in the same one.
• Badge and Highlight on a sub-entry are ignored. On a top-level entry they work.
• Anything nested more than one level deep is never shown. You can build six levels; shoppers see two, and on a phone only the top level.

Links are not checked

There is no page picker, no product picker and no category picker — just a text box. A mistyped path saves happily and gives your shopper a “page not found”. Test each link on the live shop.

Note also that an entry with no link becomes a link back to the current page, rather than an inert heading.

Three things cannot be emptied once saved

Link, Icon name and Badge keep their old value if you clear the box. To remove one, delete the entry and add it again. The edit form says so.

This screen does not create categories. It picks which of your existing catalogue categories the shop puts in front of shoppers, and how they look.

1. Go to Online Store → Categories and click Add category.
2. Pick a Catalog category from the list and save.
3. Click Edit on the row to set its presentation:
   • Display name — leave blank to use the catalogue name.
   • Icon — a Lucide icon name like shirt, sofa, apple.
   • Tile image.
   • Shown on the store — on.
4. Drag the rows into the order shoppers should see.

To create a new category, go to Catalog first. See Classification.

Not curating a category does not hide its products

This screen controls the menu and the category rails — nothing more. A product whose category you never added here is still fully on sale: it appears in search, in the full product listing, and on its own page.

To take a product off the shop, unset Online on the product itself.

“Featured” does nothing

The Featured switch says it highlights a category in the mega-menu and rails. It does not. The shop never reads it.

Curating a category and its parent breaks your ordering

If you add both a parent category and one of its children, the child is nested underneath the parent on the shop and leaves the flat order you dragged. The screen presents one flat list and gives no hint that this will happen.

Presentation cannot be cleared

Emptying Display name, Icon or Tile image keeps the old value — the form warns you. To reset one, remove the category from the store and add it again.

A row badged Catalog category missing has had its catalogue category deleted or deactivated; it will not appear on the shop. Remove it.
